Development In Harnessing Hydroelectric Energy

#Development In Electricity & Power Production

Sikkim has done very major improvements in its power and energy production and consumption pattern. It
receives most of its electricity from the 19 Hydroelectric Power Stations. Power is also obtained from National Thermal Power Corporation & Power Grid Corporation of IndiaNational Thermal Power Corporation & Power Grid Corporation of India.

The Power Station is built on the Teesta River to utilise the hydro power potential of the river. The underground Power House near Sirwani with installed capacity of 510 MW houses 3 units of 170 MW capacity each designed to generate 2573 MUs of energy in 90% dependable year with 95% machine availability. Unit II was commissioned in February, 2008 and Unit I & Unit III were commissioned in March, 2008. With the construction of the project, the area is also benefitted by development of infrastructure, education, medical facility and employment avenues. It is owned and  operated by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).

Power Generation Authorities In Sikkim

The State Government has constituted Sikkim Power Development Corporation Limited (SPDCL) to speed up developing the small Hyde projects which to date has developed and commissioned 10 MW installed capacity. Energy & Power Department and SPDCL are engaged in harnessing the existing potential by developing hydro power projects below 25 MW capacities.

The projects with 25 MW capacities and above are being developed through Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and in Joint Venture (JV) mode. The Hydro Committee was constituted by the State Government in 2004 to examine the various aspects related to hydro power development and to recommend a road map for the fast track development of the hydro power potential with the aim to harness the immense hydro potential for the overall growth and sustainable development of the State.
