In this blog, I will be talking about the great road network and bridges constructed in Sikkim, despite of the harsh terrain, and the departments associated with it.

Roads & Bridges Department (Govt. of Sikkim)


Sikkim is a landlocked State and comprises of young & fragile mountains, rivers, streams and water springs; thus, making it both diverse and vulnerable to natural catastrophe. The State is bereft of railways and waterways making roadways the only effective medium of transport.

Role

The Department serves the role of 
(i) Planning
(ii) Construction &
(iii) Maintenance of Road Bridges

Achievements

Roads & Bridges Department has expanded its road network throughout the State targeting connectivity in every village, institutions of education and health, market areas and  tourists and religious destinations. Over the last three decades, the network of roads in the State has increased by over 100%. At present, Roads & Bridges Department maintains 2308.52 Km of road including the National Highway. Efforts are also being made by the Department to connect Sikkim with its neighboring countries like – Nepal & Bhutan.

Singshore Bridge

 
The Singshore suspension bridge is the highest bridge in Sikkim and the second highest bridge in the Asian continent with over 100 meters of height. The total length of the bridge is approx. 200 meters and it connects two gorges in West of Sikkim.
